The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said the country lost as much as $100bn in revenue last year as attacks by militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta cut crude output to a record low. Kachikwu, who stated this on Tuesday in his monthly broadcast posted on his Facebook page with the title: ‘Oil sector militancy challenges: Road map to closure’, said the nation’s oil production fell by as high as one million barrels per day sometimes last year. Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai has disclosed that the Nigeria Army would recruit 12,000 men in 2017 to help fight insurgents and other uprisings across the country. Buratai was speaking during a budget defence session with the House of Representatives Committee on Army. According to him, the recruitment exercise would take place after the Army’s 2017 budget proposal of N152.8 billion is approved. He further revealed that the exercise would be in two batches with 6,000 men first and another 6,000 later. The army chief further explained that the Army was currently engaged in different operations in almost all the states of the federation, combating criminalities such as kidnapping, terrorism, pipeline vandalism, cattle rustling, among others. The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken over another airline, Odengene Air-Shuttle Services, known more as OAS Helicopters in Lagos following a court order. It was the third aviation firm to be taken over by the bad bank in four months. OAS is one of the leading helicopter chatter service companies in the country. Flight operations to the London and Johannesburg routes have been suspended by Arik. This announcement was made by the spokesman of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, Jude Nwauzor, on Tuesday in Lagos. The federal government has disclosed it will introduce speed cameras on Nigeria’s roads to help the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) curtail excessive speeding by motorists and improve safe use of the roads. Nigeria is considering a new debt service provisioning of N361 billion ($1.2 billion) for the $1 billion (N305.1 billion) Eurobond which was acclaimed to have been over-subscribed. When consummated, the development will not only add to the country’s debt stock, its current debt service provision at over N1.4 trillion will rise, and it will deepen the troubled debt-to-revenue ratio which has been impeding the country’s ability to freely finance growth projects. Government had said its 15-year Eurobond offer was priced at 7.875 per cent, with a lump sum repayment of the principal ($1 billion) at the due date – February 2032. The investors had opted for a higher yield to cover their assessed risks or devaluation in early negotiations, asking for a 7.5 per cent for a 10-year period or eight per cent and above for a 15-year period, due to foreign exchange crisis and other macroeconomic issues. Former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, on Sunday declared that he is not a thief. He made the declaration during a thanksgiving service organised in his honour in Oghara, his hometown. He disclosed that while in prison in the United Kingdom, UK, his biggest concern was how his people were coping with his absence. According to Ibori “I am not a thief and cannot be a thief”. More details into the financial state of the power sector has been revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) / Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET). The information obtained by energywatchng shows that the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Invoices and payments from generating companies (GENCOs) to distribution companies (DISCOs) and offtakers for 2016 has reflected that an invoice of N27.14bn was issued by the generating companies (GENCOs) to the offtakers while a payment of N2bn was made with a balance N24.96bn recorded at the end of 2016. The generating companies (GENCOs) issued a total invoice of N331bn to the distribution companies (DISCOs) with the DISCOs share of the total invoice put at N331bn while payment N88.03bn was received with a balance of N242.97bn recorded at the end of the period under review.
